424 Vaccine Vial

Date: Autumn 2020
Designed by: Pfzizer-BioNTech
Credit: Science Museum Group

This is the vial which held the first administered vaccine in the UK. It was used on Tuesday 8 December 2020 at 6.45am, at NHS Coventry University Hospital - it was the first time anywhere in the world that a coronavirus vaccine had been used as part of a mass immunisation programme.

The Science Museum has acquired the object -

“Although it is small and unassuming, the vial represents the boundless creativity, ingenuity and sheer hard work of scientists, medical practitioners, technicians and volunteers across the world who have researched, developed, tested and deployed a vaccine in record time.”
